Unfortunately, my experience working with Sahoon Bae, a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.), was deeply disappointing. I found communication with Mr. Bae to be extremely challenging due to his strong accent and his extremely condescending attitude when I asked him to clarify certain points. He often treated my questions as if they were beneath him, giving me the impression that he considered himself superior due to his professional credentials. Mr. Bae was hired by a homeowner to engineer a simple residential deck. Upon reviewing his plans, it was clear that this deck was excessively over-engineered, with very large footings and engineered beams, likely based on commercial standards. The project could have easily been completed under Part 9 of the building code with simple multi-ply dimensional lumber and footings half the size. I suggested a more cost-effective approach, but Mr. Bae refused to make any adjustments. As the homeowner had already retained him, we proceeded with his design. Additionally, Mr. Bae specified 3-ply 2x12 notched stringers for a simple staircase. I raised a concern that these stringers would likely rot within a few years, to which his response was: “This is pressure treated wood and that is not your concern. Just listen, and do what I tell you.” When I questioned another aspect of the design, he replied, “You’re not an engineer, are you?” His dismissive and unprofessional behavior ultimately led me to request permission from the homeowner to remove him from the project, after which I hired another engineer to take the project over. The additional cost which I covered, was well worth it. The new engineering firm agreed that Mr.Bae’s deck was grossly over-engineered and could have been completed with much less cost to the homeowner. I retired from a 25-year career in law enforcement and have spent the last 19 years building decks and residential outdoor structures. My company typically completes 120 projects each year, so I have extensive experience in the construction industry. I strongly advise anyone to consider other options when seeking engineering services. There are many highly skilled and professional engineers who are a pleasure to work with. No one should have to endure the arrogant and unhelpful attitude displayed by Mr. Bae. Coincidentally, I know Hugo De Sa, who also posted a review on Mr.Bae.
