25 Years in the Making.
The history of NATS can be traced back to the early 1980’s, a number of years before it was even founded. After studying Business Administration and Landscape Architecture, Rod decided his passion was in entrepreneurship and growing plants. In 1985 he set out to make his dreams a reality by starting a business for ‘environmental beautification’, an idea which inspired the founding of NATS in 1988 and remains at the heart of the company as it exists today.

Initially known as ‘North American Tree Specialists’, NATS was located on Fraser Highway in Surrey, British Columbia with a small but very dedicated team of employees. It was here where the company cut its teeth in the world of horticulture and began making a name for itself. After 14 hardworking years, the company had outgrown this location and was ready for a change.

In 2002, NATS underwent a transformation: The company moved to a new 30 acre location in Langley, British Columbia where the nursery was rebuilt from the ground up. This allowed for the construction of a modern propagation facility, greenhouses, shipping area, and offices to greatly increase the capacity and efficiency of the business. In addition, the NATS team was significantly expanded to consist of experienced and enthusiastic salespeople, propagators, growers, and shipping staff. These changes resulted in a marked increase in both quality and quantity of NATS’ products, and solidified NATS’ reputation as a grower and supplier of premium plant material.

In 2006, NATS was awarded the growing contract for the Vancouver Convention Centre, the largest non-industrial green roof in North America. The project involved supplying over 350,000 plants and covered a span of 4 years. Most notably, this significant undertaking represented a new direction for NATS as the company expanded its vision and product line to encompass the emerging area of green roofs and living walls.

NATS has evolved into a diverse, dynamic company, yet remains deeply rooted to more than 25 years of history. From humble beginnings to its current status as a well established and respected company, NATS’ journey has been long and eventful. Throughout this journey the company has stayed true to its commitment of environmental beautification and sustainability, and strives to preserve and continue its proud legacy through new opportunities.
